KATHMANDU, OCT 11 - The UCPN (Maoist) has said that consensus among parties was so elusive because the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML were both vying for the leadership of a new government rather than focussing on resolving the current political deadlock.

An office bearers' meeting of the UCPN (M) on Wednesday requested both the parties to resolve all contentious issues through a package deal. The Maoists said that as a major political crisis was looming large, there is an immediate need for intensive talks among the parties.

According to party spokesperson Agni Sapkota, the UCPN (M) has decided to expedite talks to resolve the existing crisis. The meeting reiterated the party stance that it would be suicidal to resign from the government without a package deal among the parties. The Maoist party stressed the revival of the Constituent Assembly to promulgate a new constitution, rather than a new election.

Meanwhile, the meeting also endorsed a work plan for the party's general convention that is scheduled to begin January 27. Over 2,000 party representatives are expected to attend the jamboree. The meeting decided to conclude conventions of all districts and state committees prior to the general convention and to choose representatives on the basis of proportional and inclusive representation. The plan will be presented at the next party meeting scheduled for Thursday, said Sapkota. The UCPN (Maoist) is holding its general convention after two decades.
